Nigerians from across all sectors were on Tuesday paying tribute to the memory of President Umaru Musa Yar`Adua who died ten years on May 5, 2010.

The tributes were being led by his successor, President Goodluck Jonathan with the deceased’s close political associate, Senator Bukola Saraki, and one of the authors of the doctrine of necessity, Senator Ike Ekweremadu also in the toe.

Yar’adua died on May 5, 2010 after a protracted illness that was preceded by the emergence of a cabal that sought to project its political weight over the polity.

He was in office from 2007 to 2010. He took ill and left for treatment in Saudi Arabia in December 2009 but returned near-comatose three months later in February. He eventually died on May 5, 2010.

Yar’adua would be remembered for his admission that the election that brought him to office was as at that time the most flawed in the history of the Fourth Republic. He had in recognition of that fact set up the machinery to rectify the electoral system.

His successor, President Jonathan continued with the reforms.

Barely 30 days after his assumption of office as president, he declared his assets.

On the occasion of his tenth memorial, many Nigerians have taken to their various social media platforms, to pay tribute to the president remembered for his espousal of the rule of law.

The tributes were led by his successor, President Jonathan who in his message posted on his Twitter handle, noted that the late president left enduring legacies.

Jonathan: Yar`adua built bridges across Nigeria

“It has been a decade since His Excellency President Umar Musa Yar’Adua was snatched by the cold hands of death. On this day, every year, his image fills our consciousness as a mark of his selflessness, typical modesty and exceptional flair.

“He was a President like no other who lived and died for the sake of his country. He stood on the side of the people, toiling day and night to make their lives better.

“President Yar’Adua built strong bridges of hope, love and understanding for which he became a force for national unity and positive change across our blessed land.

“President Yar’Adua no doubt left enduring legacies in his wholehearted devotion to the ideals of democracy, respect for peoples’ rights, freedoms and reason for living as well as commitment to the rule of law and laws of equity and justice.

“I will continue to remember President Yar’Adua as a colleague and boss who became my brother and friend. GEJ,” Jonathan tweeted.

Former Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, tweeted, “10 years after President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s passing, we are constantly reminded about his humanity, his dedication to duty and his desire for a Nigeria we can all be proud of. May Allah (SWT) forgive his sins and continue to retain for him a place in Aljannah Firdaus.”

Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu commended Yar’adua for designating Akanu Ibiam Airport, Enugu as an international airport.

“We lost a leader in the late President Yar’Adua 10 yrs ago. When in July 2007 I led SE Senators to discuss challenges facing the region with him, he was surprised the SE had no direct access to the world & graciously designated the Akanu Ibiam Airport, Enugu as an international airport,” Ekweremadu tweeted.
