The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed the immediate reopening of its offices in Edo and Ondo State towards preparations for the forthcoming of the governorship elections in the two states.

The commission had earlier scheduled the Edo and Ondo states governorship elections for September 19 and October 10, respectively.

INEC, in an announcement, “Guidelines for resumption after the COVID-19 lockdown” posted on his verified Facebook page, said “Ondo and Edo State offices should reopen immediately due to the upcoming gubernatorial elections in consultation with the relevant State Governments for issuance of necessary permits.”

The commission had earlier said the Ondo and Edo states election would not be postponed, despite the coronavirus pandemic, due to the timeframe allowed by the constitution.

The guideline, however, stipulated that the offices of the commission should be decontaminated before resumption.

“Funds required to meet the hygiene protocols (decontamination, hand sanitisers, etc) will be made available to these two state offices as soon as possible and to all other state offices as the need arises.

“All staff above age 58 with underlying medical conditions (hypertension, diabetes, asthma, renal and hepatic diseases) should work from home.

“Other staff with underlying medical conditions should work from home.

“Pregnant staff and nursing mothers should work from home.

“Under no circumstances shall visitors or contractors be allowed Into the Commission except on authorized invitation by the Commission,” the guidelines stipulated.
