Magu deserves compensation

The presidency on Tuesday opened up on the fate of Mr. Ibrahim Magu, the suspended acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes (EFCC) with the revelation that a subtle probe of the allegations against him had been ongoing for some weeks.

It was affirmed that the decision to suspend him was upon the administration’s affirmation that anyone occupying the position of chairman of the EFCC must be above board.

That affirmation it said made it imperative to undertake a painstaking probe of what was described as the weighty allegations against Magu.

While not divulging the nature of the allegations, a senior presidency source, however, disclosed that the probe and suspension was to ensure that justice was not only done but seen to be done by all.

As the source said, “The panel investigating allegations against Ag. EFCC Chairman had been sitting for some weeks now.

“In consonance with the principle of fairness and justice, it was needful that the Ag. Chairman be given opportunity to respond to the allegations, which are weighty in nature.

“Under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, nobody is above scrutiny. Repeat: nobody.

“The investigation is to reinforce transparency and accountability, rather than to vitiate it.

“Accountability for our actions or inactions is inalienable part of democracy.

“In such elevated position as that of EFCC Chairman, the holder of the position must be above suspicion.

“There’s no prejudgment. Absolutely none. The Buhari administration can be counted on to uphold fairness and justice at all times.”
