Eyitayo Jegede emerged as the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governorship primaries in Ondo State being rewarded for his fidelity to a party in which he was sabotaged in the governorship contest only four years earlier.

His main challenger was the deputy governor of the state Hon. Agboola Ajayi who just defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC.

However, party activists decided to reward Jegede with the ticket upon his faithfulness in supporting the party all through the past three years that the party has been in opposition.

Jegede was the candidate of the party in the last governorship election and lost following the intrigues pulled by the Ali Modu Sheriff faction that at that time fought the mainstream of the party. Sheriff and many of his supporters have since left the party for the APC.

Ajayi was reportedly inclined towards the Sheriff tendency and though he was elected to the House of Representatives on the platform of the PDP, he eventually defected to the APC and helped to boost Akeredolu to victory in the 2016 election.

As such coming into the primary election on Wednesday, many aborigine PDP members were determined to reward Jegede and still looked at Ajayi as one of those who pulled down the party in 2016.

Even more, Ajayi besides the fact that he just entered the party was also weakened by the fact that he had just entered the party.

However, following the victory it is claimed that Jegede is under pressure to pick Ajayi as his running mate.

Jegede was also reportedly helped by the support of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State with whom he is said to have some family relationship.

A fine gentleman with deep affiliation with Nigeria’s Northern political establishment, Jegede is respected for his humility and level headedness, factors that may help him in the ensuing conflict with the incumbent, Rotimi Akeredolu.
