The claim by Senator Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Productivity of political equality and influence with Asiwaju Ahmed Tinuhu has taken social media by storm.

In a trending video,  during a session with the House of Representatives Committee on Labour held to probe issues between the labour minister and the management of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, NSITF Ngige threw shades at James Faleke, the member representing Ikeja Federal Constituency and his political mentor, Ahmed Tinubu

“I am of the same age with your mentor in Lagos, Asiwaju. I was governor with him at the same time, he (referring to Tinubu) won election as senator I was a senator, I’m two-time minister, he isn’t a two time minister.”

The swipe aimed at Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress, has not gone down well with loyalists and sympathizers of Tinubu who argued that there is no politician in the South East region who has more political influence than Tinubu.

@OgbeniDipo Tweeted: “In fairness to Tinubu, Ngige is not on his level. Tinubu can point to at least 15 people who worked under him who have now gone on to greater heights in their careers – taking on more strategic/important roles as Governors, Ministers and Senators. Same cannot be said of Ngige.”

@martobono tweeted: “Truth is, none of the South East Politicians can be compared or can compete with Tinubu. Not even a combination of all of them since 1999. Rochas oh, Ngige oh, Obi oh, Mbadinuju combine all of them, them still no reach Tinubu political prowess people making. #SelfishBunch.”

They also shared an old picture, showing Tinubu lifting up Ngige’s hand in form of endorsement.

The assumption that no South East politician can match Tinubu, as some Twitter users argued, was because the political landscape of the South East does not allow for one-man leadership.

@TosinOlugbenga Tweeted: “The disposition of Igbo people would not have allowed a Tinubu to exist. You are talking of people with countless billionaires to subject themselves to the manipulation of one man. It’s impossible with my Igbo brothers.”

Yarkafanchan tweeted: “The nature of the igbos does not allow for a Tinubu to occur and that is a great thing.”
