A fresh crisis was erupting in the Edo State House of Assembly on Wednesday following the impeachment of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Yekini Idiaye.

The move against Idiaye follows his decision last Monday’s to back the All Progressives Congress, APC governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. In backing the APC candidate, he had claimed that Governor Godwin Obaseki failed to meet his constituency’s needs.

He had alongside two other members of the ten member House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje, Akoko-Edo Constituency II; Hon. Nosayaba Okunbor, Orhiomwon East Constituency pledged loyalty to Ize-Iyamu.

The decision by the remaining members to impeach Idiaye is bound to further raise constitutional issues as to the number of those required to impeach a presiding officer.

Legal experts would dispute whether it is the 10 members of the House that presently exist or the 24 full members including those who were not inaugurated.

The deputy governor of the state had on Tuesday alleged that a sum of forty million naira exchanged hands for Yekini’s switch of loyalty to Ize-Iyamu despite the claims of the deputy speaker that he moved based on the needs of his constituents.

Idiaye was yet to respond to the claim before the latest development.
