The crisis in the Edo State House of Assembly worsened late on Thursday after elected members of the House of Assembly who were not sworn in last year were sworn in at a secret location in Benin City, elected one of their own as a rival Speaker of the assembly.

As an olive branch that was bound to be immediately dismissed Hon. Victor Edoror of Esan Central Constituency who was elected as the Speaker pledged cooperation with the executive branch of government.

He said that Governor Godwin Obaseki would not be threatened with impeachment despite the complete loyalty of the 17 members to Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

The session in a secret place was attended by 17 elected members including five who had been inaugurated last year.

The development meant that seven legislators were left with the governor.

Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje of Akoko Edo Constituency II was also elected the Deputy Speaker of the 7th Assembly.

The election followed the swearing-in of all members-elect and the impeachment of Hon. Frank Okiye and Hon. Roland Asoro as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.

In his address, Edoror said the 7th Assembly will focus on its legislative duties, and not pursue the impeachment of any member of the Executive.

He called for unity and togetherness, stating that there was no victor, no vanquished.

Edoror also directed the Edo Commissioner of Police, the IGP, and other security agencies to eject the thugs who have invaded the Assembly Complex in Benin to allow for a rancor free plenary on Friday, August 7.
