Desmond Elliot, an actor-turn-politician, was again on the spot, following the victory of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Godwin Obaseki in the Edo governorship election.

On Sunday, the Returning Officer, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, declared Obaseki winner of the election, having polling the highest votes with 307,955 votes as against 223,619 votes polled by the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Elliot, a lawmaker representing Surulere constituency, had, during the election campaign, lambasted Obaseki for the “Edo no be Lagos” campaign mantra, arguing that Edo State can become Lagos State in terms of revenue generation and infrastructural development.

The actor also said he is a product of godfatherism and that godfathers usually seek the interests of the people, an assertion that earned him harsh criticism on the microblogging platform, Twitter.

Elliot said, “A godfather always tries to look after the interest of his people. I’m a product of godfatherism but Tinubu has never for one day asked me to do something you know would be detrimental.

“It’s progressive. So, let him ( referring to Obaseki) not castigate the whole thing. If not for godfatherism, would he be where he is today? My point isn’t even about him; it’s that I want to talk about my candidate.”

Following the victory of Obaseki, many Nigerians have taken to Twitter to mock Elliot over his comments on godfatherism in the build-up to Edo state.

@IamTheIroko tweeted: “Tell Desmond Elliot that in Edo State we retire godfathers. #EdoDecides2020.”

@Ekwulu tweeted: “Where is Desmond Elliot?#EdoNoBeLagos.”

@seunmanuell tweeted: “Desmond Elliot should be crying now for embarrassing himself on live tv.”

@erasmushart tweeted: “I wonder where Desmond Elliot would keep his face nw…. he actually believed it could b done.”
