Lagos Lawmaker Accused Of Sharing CACOVID Palliatives For Birthday
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
The comments of Mojisola Alli-Macaulay, the lawmaker representing Amuwo Odofin constituency 1 that most Nigerians youth are high on drugs all the time has sparked outrage on the social media.
Alli-Macaulay, during a recent plenary session at the Lagos State House of Assembly, said the National Orientation Agency (NOA) should orientate the Nigerian youth towards behavioural change in terms of usage of drugs and social media.
The lawmaker said unemployment should be an excuse for the youth unrest, stressing that unemployment figures is not only exclusive to Nigeria.
In the video clip that appeared on the social media, she said, “The National Orientation Agency needs to get to work. We need to begin to orientate our young people. They need people who can talk to them from time to time. They are high on drugs all the time, most of them. They go to social media and say all sorts of things. I’m even scared to give my young children phones because I am scared of what they may see on social media. It is that bad.
“It is not unemployment that should be the reason why youths should come out and begin to misbehave. There is unemployment across the world, even in the United States.
“I schooled in the UK and I saw a lot of young people who were not employed but they didn’t become hoodlums. Why can’t we look inwards and look for solutions to our problems?”
Her comments did not go down well with many Nigerians, who have taken to the microblogging platform, Twitter, to hit back at the lawmaker.
Amid the backlash, many social media users have shared images showing the birthday gifts shared by the lawmaker, when she was celebrating her birthday, alleging that were COVID-19 palliatives.
