Regulate Insecurity, Leave Social Media, Nigerians Blast Northern Governors
Many Nigerians have asked governors of the Northern states to face major problems bedeviling their region, instead of demanding for the regulation of social media.
The governors of the Northern states, on Monday, in a meeting held in Kaduna said the effect of uncontrolled social media was devastating to the country.
Their reaction was sequel to the role played by the social media in the recent #EndSARS protests, as the social media served as the mobilization avenue for Nigerian youths, during the protest against police brutality.
The governors, in a communique signed by Chairman, Northern States Governors’ Forum, Governor Simon Lalong called on the Federal Government to create mechanisms to control and censor the social media.
“The superlative agitations and other change regime actions outside the ballot box soon take advantage of the peaceful protests to push for their separative agenda. The meeting endorses the indivisibility, indissolubility, and oneness of the nation.
“The meeting took note of the devastating effect of the uncontrolled social media in spreading fake news. Therefore, calls for major control mechanism and censorship of the social media practice in Nigeria.
“Meeting raises attention on the need to keep a strict watch on the Federal Capital Territory to guide against unwarranted and destructive protests to safeguard critical assets of the nation,” part of the communique reads.
The call of the Northern governors that social media should be regulated came as a surprise to many Nigerians, who were expecting the governors to concentrate on the issues facing their region.
Those who have reacted to the development asked the Northern governors to focus on insecurity and poverty battling their region.
