The conviction of six Nigerians for funding Boko Haram by a court in the United Arab Emirates, UAE has sparked reactions on social media.

GWG writes that the UAE court had sentenced Surajo Abubakar Muhammad and Saleh Yusuf Adamu to life imprisonment and the remaining four, Ibrahim Ali Alhassan, AbdurRahman Ado Musa, Bashir Ali Yusuf and Muhammad Ibrahim Isa were sentenced to ten-year imprisonment respectively.

According to Daily Trust, the accused were charged with funding Boko Haram as they facilitated transfers of about USD782, 000.00 from Dubai to Nigeria for alleged terror operations between 2015 and 2016.

This development has sparked reactions as a cross section of Nigerians took to the micro-blogging platform to express their anger.

According to a Twitter user, who is identified as Azeez Olajide ❼ @zeezish, stated that the 6 Nigerians are just “Pawns” and if the issue is well investigated, the actual sponsors could be traced and another Twiter user wanted the UAE authorities to go beyond naming names but to release their pictures as well.

Another Twitter user was of the view that if the six Nigerians had made it back to the country that they would have been offered appointments by the Buhari administration and

mr_robmichael was saddened that the government had disclosed that Boko Haram had been defeated while it was been funded.

A twitter user took to the platform to express consternation that the energy used in talking about the “indecent dress” of the star actress, Rahama Sadau could have been used on the issue of the six convicted Nigerians.

Unu Amaro Kam Siri Kwado@AfamDeluxo wrote: “Saleh Yusuf Adamu (life imprisonment). Others, Ibrahim Ali Alhassan, AbdurRahman Ado Musa, Bashir Ali Yusuf and Muhammad Ibrahim Isa,(10yrs each) These same guys almost shutdown Twitter when Rahama Sadau posted her ‘indecent’ pictures few days ago.

“If Northerners will use the power of social Media like they did on pressuring and condemning Rahama Sadau over her personal life to pressure the northern leaders Both Traditional & political elite to end insecurity & extreme poverty in the region, Nigeria would be a better.

“Why do you guys only have a boner when it involves irrelevant things like how a woman should dress & all that nonsense whereas you guys are one of the most sexually active preeks on earth. Kaduna state lost 124 children in 9months & not even a single person from the North talked about it.

“More than 13 million kids are out of school in the North and it is disheartening that this time bomb doesn’t bother some of these.

“There is insurgency, banditry, Boko Haram and all kinds of unimaginable things but the only thing bothering Northerner is how to censor social media & Sadau’s ‘indecent’ dressing.

“Kano state government destroyed 1,975,000 bottles of beer worth N200m. This is a state that receives allocation (including taxes made from Alcohol).

Another social media user also agreed with this point of view as the user stated: “Everyday in Nigeria na new chapter… So North dey sponsor BH, while arewa dey pursue indecent dressing… honestly, if Netflix can produce the event in Nigeria, Only 2020 episode… the money will cover 2021 budget”.

Also, another social media user questioned the priority of the government as it ignored important issues to dwell in social media regulation. He wrote: “Lai Mohammed went around regions to discuss social media regulation yet pressing issues in d country. UAE just sentenced 6 Nigerians on account of affiliation with Boko Haram but Nigerian leaders were more concerned with SM regulation. Youths wake up to diz monkey-ruled administration!”
