The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), has joined in congratulating US President-elect, Joe Biden for emerging victorious in the just concluded November 3rd presidential poll.

The group in a statement issued to GWG on Friday by its Executive Director, Mallam Auwal Ibrahim Musa, also congratulated vice-President, Kamala Harris, saying that the outcome of the election reflects the progressive change desired of the people of United States as well as high anticipation of the international community for the US leadership in pressing global matters”.

CISLAC also called on Biden to ensure that adequate attention is given to Nigeria so that accountability and good governance will be a priority in the country and this will reduce the dwindling socio-economic situation that might have serious consequences on world security and affect the United States.

CISLAC also enjoined Biden to look into the trade agreements between the two countries so that it will be beneficial to Nigeria so that the issue of unemployment will drastically be reduced in Nigeria.

The group while reinforcing for the call of increase in trade so as to reduce poverty in Nigeria enjoined the Biden to look also at the issue of insecurity in the country as kidnapping, rural banditry and insurgency have destabilized the economy.

Also, the issue of corruption was also highlighted as according to the group, it has eaten deep into the nation’s fabric.

It said: “It is estimated that the cost of corruption in Nigeria runs as high as 30% of the country’s GDP.”

The group pointed out that although the Buhari’s government has made efforts to recover some assets stolen by corruption but efforts are not made to prevent the assets from being stolen again.

CISLAC further stated that efforts should be made to help Nigeria in her quest to have an electoral reform beyond the smart card reader and “unhealthy separatist agitations” should be worked against and also sanctions should not be imposed on Nigeria as it will be detrimental to the poor.
