The National Executive Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress on Tuesday dissolved all states, zonal, and national party structures.

In the place of the excos, the dissolved executives at all levels according to the resolution will now act as caretaker committees with the mandate to produce substantive executives ahead of the election of the new executives by June 2021.

The party’s NEC also extended the tenure of the party’s caretaker extraordinary convention planning committee headed by Governor Mai Buni by six months.

The decision was on Tuesday being interpreted as a coup against the executives with the advantage held by the National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu being diminished.

Tinubu as national leader of the party had the loyalty of many of the executives in the different states.

Despite the fact that the dissolved excos will remain in office as caretaker, they will now be bound to adjust to looking up to a new set of leaders calling the shots who will not be appointed by the national leader.

Even more, the decision to transit the executives across all levels to GWG understands that an attempt to raise the legality of the move was raised during the NEC meeting but the move was quickly shot down by the camp of the president.

The implication of the move for those in office is that they would be in between straits challenging the move in the courts and at the same time serving as caretakers.

However, one major gain for the camp of the National Leader from the Tuesday NEC was President Muhammadu Buhari’s verbalization of the power shift agreement.

The president said that there was an agreement on power shift which must be respected.

“May I use this opportunity to remind all of us of the need to recreate our negotiation secret of 2012, 2013 under our legacy parties. What guided our success to achieve the merger that produced the APC was the respect we were able to have for each other,” Buhari said.

“In those times, decisions reached at both formal and informal consultations were respected with trusted initiatives taken and believed that they were needed to produce the required political platform that could guarantee electoral victory.

However, whether Tinubu would benefit from it would now depend on the sagacity of the national leader.
