In Change Of Tact, IGP Mum On Igboho’s Arrest
By Chuks Ekpeneru
In an apparent change of tact, the Nigerian Police has vowed to apprehend the culprits who razed part of Chief Sunday Igboho’s house in Ibadan, Oyo State on Tuesday. It is a change of tact for the police which had pledged to effect Igboho’s arrest last weekend.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu made the vow on Wednesday during an interview with journalists in Lagos on the sidelines of the commissioning of a Senior Police Officer’s Quarters in Ikeja, Lagos.
The police vow to protect Igboho is coming against the earlier pledge by the IGP who according to presidential spokesman, Mallam Garba Shehu had directed the Commissioner of police in Oyo State to effect Igboho’s arrest.
Shehu had while speaking with BBC Hausa Service said the order for Igboho’s arrest was premised on the allegation that Igboho chased out the Seriki Fulani in Igangan, Oyo State last Friday.
Following Igboho’s action of Friday, unknown gun men visited Igboho’s house in Soka area of Ibadan where they razed part of the building.
Speaking on the development, the IGP said those who committed the arson action would be arrested.
According to Adamu, “Anybody that goes to burn anybody’s property, it is nothing but criminal. We have already asked our men to fish out whoever did that and the person will be punished . We have laws in this country and we must respect them. If anybody goes fowl of the law, he must be punished.
Despite earlier ordering Igboho’s arrest, the IGP said: “Every citizen of this country has a responsibility to this country too. Therefore, those who have information on the arsonists should come out and give it to the Police, to enable the Police to do their job”.
The commissioned SPO’s building which was a block of 10 flats , with a twin one still under construction according to him, was part of the welfare package for policemen.
