Zanzibar first vice-president Hamad dies of COVID-19 at 77

Zanzibar’s vice president, Seif Sharif Hamad, 77, died on Wednesday at the Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he was on admission.

The president of Zanzibar, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, announced the death of the seasoned politician, who was also the national chairman of ACT-Wazalendo party.

Dr Mwinyi has declared seven days of national mourning for Hamad, whom he picked as vice-president after the October 2020 Zanzibar election.

The cause of his death was not immediately known, but it was earlier reported that Hamad was admitted at Mnazimmoja hospital in Zanzibar after he reportedly tested positive to COVID-19.

President John Pombe Magufuli has sent condolence messages to the President and people of Zanzibar following the death of the ACT-Wazalendo national chairman.

“I have received with profound shock the news of the death of Seif Sharif Hamad, the first vice president of Zanzibar,” said Magufuli in his message.
