Buhari Hails, Obaseki Mum As Oshiomhole Clocks 69

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on the occasion of his 69th birthday. The congratulation from Buhari to Oshiomhole came in the face of the loud silence from Mr Godwin Obaseki who succeeded the celebrant as governor of Edo State.

President Buhari’s congratulatory message was conveyed in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu made available to  GreenWhiteGreen GWG.

He said:

“President Buhari joins family, friends and well-wishers around the country to celebrate the former Governor of Edo State, thanking God for a life of service to the nation, good health and opportunity to commemorate this special day.

“As the former labour leader looks forward to joining the club of septuagenarians , the President urges him to rededicate his life to working for the prosperity of those in need, building bridges among people of diverse backgrounds and faith; and inspiring others to be patriotic, eschewing politics of division and acrimony.

“President Buhari also recognises the immense contributions the former national chairman has made to our nation, wishing the people’s comrade more years of service to build a better country.”

While Buhari congratulated Oshiomhole, there was, however, no indication of any message of felicitation to the former governor’s successor and one time political protegee, Obaseki.

The last public message of a public congratulation from Obaseki to Oshiomhole was in 2018 when the former labour leader, governor, and party chairman clocked 66.

In that message which was personally signed by Obaseki, he said:

“As you mark 66 years on April 4, 2018, we celebrate you and all that you have accomplished through your humble beginnings to your illustrious career as a labour leader, and as the immediate past formidable, progressive governor of our dear state.

“Your leadership prowess has ushered in a new chapter in our quest for development and we celebrate your unforgettable contributions to advancing our march to modernisation.

“Your commitment to humanity, and how you have, at different times through various capacities, impacted the people Yar`Adua ou lead, cut you out as a light that cannot be hidden.

“We appreciate you and all you have done and stand for to the people of Edo state and all Nigerians. We wish you many more years of fruitful service to humanity.”

Against the backgroud of the felicitation from Buhari, stakeholders would sought to measure it in reviewing the disharmony between Oshiomhole and Obaseki.

The bitter quarrel between the two men led to Obaseki’s disqualification from the APC governorship primary in 2019 and the fierce but failed campaign mounted against the governor’s re-election by Oshiomhole and his party.

Obaseki has fired back by initiating serial actions against Oshiomhole and his proxies in Edo State including the probe of the Benin storm water project and the retrieval of property channeled to Oshiomhole’s aides including Obaseki ahead of the 2016 transition.
