Saraki EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Saturday in Abuja confirmed the arrest and detention of the former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki.

Mr Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesperson of the commission, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Saraki was invited for questioning over allegations of corruption and money laundering.

He said the former senate president was currently in the custody of the commission for continuation of interrogation.

The invitation and detention of Saraki for interrogation was happening days after a former Nasarawa State Gov. Tanko Al-Makura and his wife, Mairo, were invited and interrogated.

The commission had invited Al-Makura and the wife over alleged breach of public trust and misappropriation of billions of naira by his administration. (NAN)

He, however, was not specific on the allegations that had been raised against Saraki.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Saraki as Senate President between 2015 and 2019 fought off the EFCC on several allegations including wrongful declaration of assets while his wife was at one time also quizzed by the commission.

The case against Saraki was at that time shadowed by the political nuances in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC as he was reported in some quarters to have been targeted upon his success in bypassing the political permutations of some APC leaders in winning the office of Senate President.

He was also arraigned along with Senator Ike Ekweremadu of forging the Senate Rule book but that charge was eventually withdrawn by the private lawyer recruited by the Federal Government to prosecute the case.
