PDP Leaders Visit Jonathan, Beg Him To Remain In Party

It has been revealed that the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Yemi Akinwonmi, on Tuesday, led a delegation of party leaders to visit ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan, in his Abuja residence.

The development according to a report by The Punch was to appeal to Jonathan not to leave PDP.

Those on Akinwonmi’s delegation were Daisi Akintan, former caretaker secretary of the PDP in the South-West and the secretary of ex-officio forum and a member of the National Executive Committee, Mrs Helen Taiwo.

Although the three-member team met with the former President behind closed doors, it was gathered that the visit was designed to acquaint Jonathan with current happenings within the party and seek his advice on how best to find an amicable solution to the crisis.

A source privy to the meeting was quoted by The Punch to have said, “The South West team were with the former President to appeal to him not to abandon the party.

“They also appealed to him to show more than a passing interest in the affairs of the party by becoming more actively involved in the activities of the party. The former President assured the team that he would not abandon the party.”

Green White Green (GWG) recalls the party has recently been hit by different crisis including the suspension of its chairman, Uche Secondus, by a Cross River High Court.

There is also high likelihood that the PDP will pick its presidential candidate for the 2023 elections from the north as stakeholders are set to zone the chairmanship position of the party to the South.

During its 92nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the weekend, the party had announced that it will arrive at a zoning formula for the National Working Committee (NWC) at a meeting billed for September 9.

This comes as the struggle for political power among the political gladiators hots up ahead of the party’s national convention slated for October 30 and 31.

The process for the election of new NWC members continues despite the raging crisis in the party which has sparked several litigations and court injunctions.
