The Federal Government, on Monday, filed fresh terrorism charges against the embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu and as such effectively squashing hopes for a political solution to free the IPOB leader.

In the amended process it filed before the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the government increased the counts in the initial charge it preferred against Kanu from seven to 15.

Kanu, who has been in detention since his reported abduction from Kenya and forceful return to Nigeria, faced seven treasonable felony charges, is now to enter his fresh plea to 15 amended charges marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, and signed by the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, M. B. Abubakar.

The charges were amended barely 24 hours before the scheduled commencement of hearing by trial Justice Binta Nyako.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that ahead of the trial on Tuesday that IPOB has declared a lockdown in the Southeast.

Meanwhile large sections of the Southeast were on Monday evening gripped by tension arising from the lockdown declared by IPOB to mark the court appearance of Nnamdi Kanu.

The Ebonyi State Government had in response to the lockdown vowed to deal with anyone or business obeying the lockdown order issued by IPOB. Such orders by the government have in the past been ignored by the citizenry in the face of the jungle justice that come from enforcers of the lockdown.

How the fresh charges filed against Nnamdi Kanu would resonate among his supporters and stakeholders is yet another development that is expected to compound the situation.
