One of the early favourites in the AFCON competition, Ghana were eliminated from the championship on Tuesday after tournament debutants, Comoros pulled a major 3-2 victory over the former champions.

The defeat meant that Ghana failed to qualify from the Group C after their third game.

Ghana started the competition on the wrong foot as they lost their first group game 1-0 to Morocco. Their second group game was one to regret for them, as they threw away a 1-0 lead in the 88th minute to Gabon. The result meant they had to win their last group game to enable them qualify for the knockout rounds.

After conceding an early goal in the 4th minute to Comoros via El Fardou Ben, who lashed in a beauty from just outside the box, bad soon became worse as Ghana saw their captain Andre Ayew sent off for a contentious tackle in the 25th minute of the game after a VAR review by the referee.

He became the first Black Stars captain to be sent off in an AFCON tournament. Ghana soon fell down two goals behind and thereafter, Ghana started to show their fighting spirit and put in their best performance in the competition so far. In no time, they pulled two goals back in the space of 13 minutes.

Momentum was built after their second goal and Ghana started to push for the winner, a move which was well exploited by Comoros as they hit Ghana on the break and scored the winner in the 85th minute setting a bang in the AFCON memory books.

The four time champions were left with their tails between their legs as they bowed out of the competition in the group stage for the first time since 2006, after consecutively reaching the knockouts 7 times.

Beaten by debutants Comoros, in a historic win for their opponents, one of Africa’s giants and supposed favourites for the AFCON top prize, Ghana were eliminated.
