The condemnation of the alleged deportation of Osun indigenes from Lagos State by Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has sparked a flurry of reactions.

Many commenters dragged Obi, even referencing his tenure as Anambra governor when his government repatriated beggars to other states.

Some critics, recalling the nickname “Gbajue” given to him by Professor Wole Soyinka, insinuated that Obi’s stance was politically motivated.

They questioned his sincerity, suggesting that his actions were influenced by political interests rather than genuine concern.

The incident in question occurred on Saturday when reports emerged of Osun indigenes being picked up by police officers from various parts of Lagos, including Ajah, TBS, and Lagos Island.

In response, Obi took to social media to express his dismay, describing the deportation as a violation of citizens’ rights and emphasizing the importance of unity, fairness, and justice.

“I am deeply saddened and shocked by the recent reports of the deportation of citizens mostly of Osun State origin by Lagos State authorities. This is not merely a concern for Osun State but for all Nigerians who uphold the principles of unity, fairness, and justice,” Obi wrote.

“I find this action very distasteful because of the far-reaching effects it will have on our National cohesion and development. As a pan-Nigerian advocate, I vehemently oppose any form of discrimination, injustice, or violation of our citizens’ rights.

“Every Nigerian, irrespective of their state of origin or place of residence, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

“Let us always remember that we are all Nigerians, united by a common destiny. And that it is our collective duty to uphold the values of unity, fairness, and justice, and to stand against any form of discrimination or injustice. Our constitution guarantees every Nigerian citizen the right to reside and find livelihood in any and every part of the federation.

“I implore all Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant as we await the outcome of the investigation. Meanwhile, the security agencies in Osun State are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and well-being of the deported youths.

“Together, let us strive for a Nigeria where every citizen is accorded dignity and respect, regardless of their background or place of origin or residence. A new and different Nigeria is indeed possible! Let us strive towards it in unity,” he added.

In the midst of the controversy, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, directed an immediate investigation into the matter.

He engaged with Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos, who also expressed shock and promised urgent action. Adeleke urged residents to remain calm while security agencies conducted surveillance.

@GoziconC: Shameless Man.During your time as governor of Anambra state, did you not deport Northerners and Ebonyi state indegenes back to their states?

Did you not place a tag on every northerner living in Anambra, especially Onitsha/Awka axis?

It was during your tenure that Mosques were demolished in Anambra state.

And here you are, opening your wide hypocritic mouth to talk. Alakori 🤡.

@_callmebekky: These unity you talk about must start from Enugu, Imo, Abia and Amanbra state or do you forbid unity in your region. They say charity begins at home however you want to start your own charity from Canada. Go up and go down in the voice of Reno Omokri you will never be president of the federal republic of Nigeria, you can go be president of your Hero Beer company.

Lastly stay away from anything concerning southwest, you’re not the president!

@daylearny: Don’t put your yeye mouth into this matter…. It is none of your business . This is a southwest and yoruba to yoruba matter. Osun governor is already on it and things will be resolved without you putting mouth. Your focus should be on your region and your state….

@maryam_Jidayi: You are not concerned about the people of Osun state. You just want to score a cheap political point. You know your Audience sha!

@akomscopy: When PROF WOLE SOYINKA called him Gbajue (419) 😂😂😂…

He knows what he was saying, a proper fraud 🤭🤭🤦

@pontrol_777: don’t need to talk much cause you will never be the president.

Yr middle name shld be hypocrisy.

During yr term as the governor you packed the northerners in a trailer and deported them back to their states  today you are writing epistles over a fake news of Lagos state sending people back to osun state. Yorubas are not hooligans. Every Yoruba person is welcome in Lagos state!
