AFCON upsets

Nigeria were astonishingly outwitted, outsmarted and sent out of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON tournament on Sunday night in the round of 16 by the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia sinking Nigerian hearts just as they did after the own goal by Godwin Odiye in 1978 sent Nigeria out of the that year’s World Cup qualification.

That was despite playing some of the best football Nigerians had seen in about five years before the advent of the immediate past team manager, Gernet Rohr.

Many didn’t foresee Nigeria losing 1-0 to Tunisia in the round of 16 after the Super Eagles won their three matches in the group stage while Tunisia managed to qualify as one of the best losers.

While Nigerians are now asking what could have happened with renewed focus on the technical capacity of team manager, Augustine Eguavoen,  GreenWhiteGreen GWG articulates four key facts from the Nigeria – Tunisia game

1. Nigeria failed to score against Tunisia in the AFCON for the first time.

2. The Super Eagles lost to Tunisia in the AFCON within regulation time for the first time ever.

3. Tunisia kept a clean sheet against Nigeria in the AFCON for the first time. They conceded at least a goal in each of their (5) previous meetings.

4. The Super Eagles were unbeaten in their last 7 matches against Tunisia.

5. The cruel ouster of Nigeria from AFCON is a sad reminder of how an own goal in the 1978 World Cup qualifier when Nigeria just like in 2022 presented a very formidable team but lost through an own-goal scored by the irrepressible Godwin Odiye. That brought an end to Odiye’s stint in the national team as he relocated to the United States where he had a flourishing soccer career.
