Abramovich hands over chelsea

Roman Abramovich has handed over the stewardship of Chelsea Football Club to the Chelsea Charitable Foundation, the club announced on its website on Saturday evening.

The development came in the wake of increasing speculations on Abramovich’s legal status in London especially following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Abramovich has been accused in the past of collaborating with the regime in Russia led by Valadimir Putin.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that on account of the controversies that the residency status of Abramovich has been in question and the move to remove himself from the custody of the club may be aimed at protecting the club from his political problems.

The Trustees are as follows: Bruce Buck, John Devine, Emma Hayes, Piara Powar, Paul Ramos and Sir Hugh Robertson.

The statement from the Roman Abramovich read thus:

During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities. I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.

Supporters and Chelsea officials are yet to react to the decision by Abramovich to hand over control of the club.
