The Police Command in Gombe State, on Tuesday, said it received no fewer than 93 cases of rape in the state in 2021.

The Commissioner of Police (CP), Ishola Babaita, stated this in an interview with Newsmen in Gombe.

Babaita, who said that rape cases were on the decline in the state in view of the command’s effort in tackling the menace, described it as a “serious offence.”

He added that 104 suspects were arrested during the period under review, and 88 were charged to court, while five cases were still under investigation.

He said the command would ensure all the suspects faced the consequences of their crimes.

He said there was no excuse for anyone to engage in any form of sexual-based violence against women and children “because of the physical or psychological effects that the victims were made to go through.”

The police boss added that the command had “strong footing” against any form of sexual violence or any other violence
against women and children in the state.

“We have been carrying out advocacy and partnering with critical stakeholders toward eliminating cases of rape in our command.

“We are doing this by involving stakeholders from religious, community leaders, women groups among others as a way of sustaining the campaign against rape,” he said.

The commissioner advised parents to always speak up whenever such cases occurred, adding that “you are not doing the society, women and children any good by your silence.”

According to him, perpetrators of rape are not fit to live among people because of the kind of threats they expose women and girls to.

He added that “it is in view of that we are appealing to everyone to help with the right information to arrest culprits and send them to court.

“The psychological and emotional torture from rape or any form of sexual violence on victims increases whenever they see perpetrators of such crimes walking freely.”

Babaita said there was a strong connection between drug abuse and rape, adding that many suspects have been found to been influenced by one drug or the other.
