Alex Iwobi’s strike in the ninth minute of added time ended a barren period of eight hours without a goal for Everton, as they breathed new life into their fight against relegation with a bad-tempered 1-0 win over Newcastle United and avenged a sorry defeat in February’s reverse fixture.

An endgame of pure tumult and tension was foreshadowed by a pulsating, end-to-end first half. Desperate to see their side end a run of four successive defeats, Everton provoked an electrifying pace to the game as they came close to scoring through an unlikely source in Ben Godfrey, but the defender’s effort was comfortably saved.

Newcastle who have been brilliant since the turn of the year under Eddie Howe managed a couple of chances but both sides went into the tunnel still deadlocked.

The second half, more like the first was pulsating as ever as both teams put in thumping tackles and wholehearted defending to keep things even. That intensity soon got the hosts in trouble as they were reduced to ten men, when Allan was shown a straight red card after a rough tackle.

That, however, did not deter Everton.

Against all the odds, Everton’s Nigerian star Alex Iwobi got the winning goal in the 99th minutes as he delivered the killer blow against Newcastle deep into stoppage time.

The winger slotted the ball calmly into the net, scoring for the first time since November last year and ending a 928-minute wait for a goal at Goodison Park. His goal pulls the Toffees three points clear of the relegation zone.

Iwobi who missed out on a national team call-up after he was red-carded in the Africa Cup of Nations 2021 has reignited life into his career as he becomes the newest hero for Frank Lampard’s side.
