Guardiola Manchester City record

Pep Guardiola has entrenched his record in the football world with Tuesday’s Manchester City UEFA champions league quarter final win over Atletico Madrid that also blemished Diego Simeone attacking record. It was the first time since Simeone became Atletico Madrid manager that the team failed to make a single attempt on target.

Manchester City edged out a hard fought 1-0 win over Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal first leg at Etihad as Phil Foden made an instant impact off the bench, providing the assist for Kevin De Bruyne who scored the winner.

Having already defeated the red side of Manchester, Atlético had their sights firmly set on Pep Guardiola’s men, who stood in their way of reaching their first UEFA Champions League semi final since the 2016/17 campaign. Manchester City also had a point to prove, after they fell at the final hurdle against Chelsea in the competition last season. The home side dominated the first period as predicted, but failed to create enough goalscoring chances. Jan Oblak made a couple of saves in the first half to keep the scoreline deadlocked.

The second half saw substitute Phil Foden provide the magic moment for the hosts after only being on the pitch for 79 seconds, slipping a through ball to Kevin De Bruyne who scored imperiously to net what was the eventual winner. Atlético Madrid punished for their lack of cutting edge, leaving themselves a goal behind for the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. Here are key facts from the game as the Guardiola tutored Manchester City beat Atletico Madrid 1-0;

• Pep Guardiola has now won more UEFA Champions League knockout games in charge of Man City than he did with Barcelona:

-City: 23 games, 15 wins

-Barca: 26 games, 14 wins

• Phil Foden has been directly involved in 20+ goals for the second consecutive season for Manchester City (35 games – 11 goals, 9 assists).

• Atlético Madrid have failed to register a single attempt on target in a game in all competitions for the first time under Diego Simeone.
