How Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich Protects His Luxury Assets From Sanctions
Since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine broke out, Roman Abramovich has come to the fore as an unexpected participant in the peace talks between the two parties.
Following sanctions imposed by several countries, the Russian tycoon has plenty of places to take refuge both for him and his belongings such as his fleet of jets and helicopters, since there are several countries which function as a tax havens.
Just days after war broke out in Ukraine, the United Kingdom imposed exemplary sanctions against Abramovich, whose assets were frozen.
Which are Abramovich’s assets?
His assets include a triple penthouse in a 37-storey Chelsea Waterfront building worth 35 million euros and a six-storey townhouse in Eaton Square that he bought for 33m euros, with the UK government being willing to convert these properties to centres for Ukrainian refugees.
However, the relationships that Abramovich has forged all these years have allowed him to avoid United States’ sanctions, because they consider his participation in peace talks between Ukraine and Russia to be valuable.
In March, the Russian businessman managed to move two mega-yachts to Turkey, which has yet to impose sanctions on him. In addition, there are rumours that the Russian tycoon has bought Turkish club Goztepe SK.
According to the maritime authorities, one of his yachts, called ‘Eclipse’, docked in the resort of Marmaris, while ‘Solaris’ is at the docks of the Turkish city of Bodrum.
