Why El-Rufai Endorsed Sani As Successor
By Augustine Adah
Augustine Adah in this piece reviews the reasons why Governor Nasir El-Rufai may have endorsed Senator Uba Sani as his successor.
It is not uncommon in Nigerian politics for an outgoing president or governor to be concerned about who succeeds them in office. The reason is because they don’t want their legacies to fade into thin air within a short time by their successor.
To some, it is a ploy to cover their financial and other atrocities committed while in office which they believe their anointed candidate would not expose if they eventually become the governor.
It was as such not surprising that Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State has endorsed Senator Uba Sani as his successor in 2023.
The endorsement does not come as a surprise to those who know the relationship that exists between the two politicians. The governor played a significant role in the emergence of Sani as senator representing Kaduna central against the re-election of Comrade Shehu Sani who is an avowed critic of Rufai’s administration in Kaduna State. Before going to the Senate, Sani had served as special adviser to the governor.
The decision to endorse Sani apart from his close relationship with the governor may not be unconnected with the way his impact was felt in the senate in terms of quality legislative assignment. The amendments of the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) Act and that of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), which were sponsored by Sani to date remain the only members’ bills assented to by the president, without amendment. These may have announced him on the world stage as a very serious-minded legislator.
The passage of the Bill for an Act to Repeal the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act and to Re-enact the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act and Other Matters Connected therewith into law, is considered landmark legislation, because of its profound impact in ensuring a stable financial sector.
Several Nigerians may not have problem with endorsing a successor if it is done in the interest of the generality of the people. Any politician who has demonstrated an uncommon ability to govern the state judging by his performance in previous office should be encouraged and supported for a higher position. However, an endorsement that is aimed at self serving must be condemned in all ramifications.
In Kaduna, the governor may have spoken, it is left for the people to accept his preferred candidate or reject him based on his political trajectory and other factors.
