In a major snub of the crusade against zoning by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has said that zoning is in the constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and that he would abide by the party’s decision on it.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Atiku had in the past trenchantly supported zoning across the board and had accused President Goodluck Jonathan of usurping the turn of the North in 2011 and 2015.

However, Bala Mohammed who is ironically contesting for the presidential ticket of the PDP speaking to newsmen after meeting with Niger PDP delegates in Minna on Monday, Mohammed said political offices zoning is in the party’s Constitution.

Bala Mohammed said that zoning was designed to ensure equity and justice and to devolve power between the federating entities, a point Atiku has underplayed by projecting that zoning should come after winning the presidential ticket.

“We believe in the supremacy of the party and zoning can only reinforce us if done by the party. We will accept wherever it is zoned to.

“I don’t have a problem with zoning and I don’t see it as a problem.

“It’s a formula brought to bring devolution of power between the federating entities. It is the only way and means to ensure equity and justice,’’ he said.

Mohammed said his visit to Niger was to sell his candidature to party elders and to Nigerians, stressing that he would abide by whatever decision the party came up with.

The assertion by Governor Bala Mohammed on zoning is bound to exacerbate the division between him and Atiku, a development that has seen fierce exchange of words between the two camps.
