Okowa On The Ascendancy Over Ibori Forces Ahead Of Guber Primaries
By GWGNG Political Editor
The gloves are out in Delta State and the incumbent governor of the state, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa may have asserted his political ascendancy in the state following the setbacks for the daughters of his two predecessors, James Ibori and Emmanuel Uduaghan in the weekend primaries of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
GWGNG reports that Orode Uduaghan, daughter of Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, Okowa’s immediate predecessor as governor lost her bid to unseat the incumbent state legislator in Warri North while the bid by Erhiatake Ibori, daughter of the penultimate governor of the state, Chief James Ibori to unseat the PDP incumbent in Ethiope Federal Constituency ended in a stalemate. The primary is scheduled to be rerun on Monday.
GWGNG further reports that at the same time, Okowa’s daughter, Marilyn Okowa-Daramola easily walked through the process after she was unanimously adopted as the PDP candidate in her father’s Ika North East State Constituency.
Political sources also assert that all those backed by Okowa prevailed in the weekend primaries.
These developments according to multiple political sources on ground underline the political sophistication of Okowa who has against odds projected his ascendancy over his two predecessors and especially Ibori, to whom many had believed he was obligated to.
One political actor in the Delta North area of the state told GWGNG on Monday morning:
“The coast is clear for Okowa’s aspirant (Sheriff) in the governorship fight. If Ibori could not deliver his daughter, he cannot prevail on the people to support his preferred gubernatorial aspirant.”
Ibori is believed to have insisted on David Edevbie as the candidate against the reported insistence of Okowa on someone else. Okowa is now believed to have settled on the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Sheriff Oborevwori and with the results of the weekend primaries now known to have built up the ascendancy over Ibori.
“The results from across the state clearly show the dexterity of Gov Okowa. Some of the aspirants that lost were given contracts running into billions of naira. It was a payoff of some sort. In those areas, he supported more than one person for the same position. Any of them he gave contracts few weeks ago lost. A kind of severance,” the political actor said.
Another political actor and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Delta Central, said:
“The gloves are out and Okowa has bared his fangs, he refuses to be intimidated by people he knows do not like him and will harm him if he is foolish enough to handover to Edevbie,” a prominent political player from Delta Central told GWGNG.
The final push between the Ibori and the Okowa camps is expected to come to a climax on Tuesday when the PDP conducts its governorship primaries and the outcome will determine whether the incumbent governor is really on the ascendancy.
