Senator Ike Ekweremadu has debunked reports of stepping down from the Enugu State governorship race as alleged by Senator Jim Nwobodo earlier on Tuesday.

GWGNG reports that Nwobodo had at a press briefing in Enugu presented Dr Peter Mbah as a consensus candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP adding that Ekweremadu had given heed to the arrangement by stepping down.

Director-General of the Ikeoha Campaign Organisation, Hon Charles Asogwa while debunking the assertion of Ekweremadu stepping down for Mbah as inferred by Nwobodo said:

“Our attention has been drawn to a news report where a statement was credited to His Excellency, Senator Jim Nwobodo, to the effect that Senator Ike Ekweremadu has adopted and stepped down for Barr Peter Mbah as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 general election.

“This is false and should be disregarded,” Asogwa said.

Earlier, Nwobodo had unfolded what he claimed as a truce in the governorship battle with the candidacy of Mbah.

GWGNG reports that the outgoing governor of the state is believed to be supporting Chijoke Edeoga as his successor.

Nwobodo disclosed that Senator Ekweremadu has accepted to support Mbah.

His words: “From my interaction with a number of them, I was looking for somebody who I think should redevelop Enugu State.

“As far back as October 2019, I invited Peter Mbah to my house. When he came, I told him to consider running for a position, especially Governor. He didn’t give me an answer immediately, but later he came and said he would consider running.”

Meanwhile, the claim by Senator Nwobodo that Senator Ekweremadu was stepping down has yet to resonate with his supporters. Ekweremadu had earlier decided to step down from the Senate seat he has occupied since 2003 in 2023.
