The presidency has claimed ignorance of the sack of Mr Godwin Emefiele from his position as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

A senior presidency source asked on the development said: “Nobody here is aware of anyone being sacked. Thanks.”

The speculations spread across the markets and political circles on Wednesday afternoon, remarkably just as Mr. Emefiele embarked on a trip out of the country.

GWGNG reports that Governor Emefiele had presided over the scheduled Monetary Policy Committee, MPC meeting on Monday and Tuesday just before he embarked on his trip.

At that meeting, the MPC resolved to for the first time since December 2020 raise the MPR, the benchmark rate at which the apex bank lends to commercial banks and the rate which determines most other interest rates in the country.

The speculations about Governor Emefiele came against the background of the recent exposure by the apex banker who was brought under pressure by interest groups to contest the 2023 presidential election.

GWGNG had reported Mr Emefiele as disowning the group which bought the All Progressives Congress, APC presidential expression of interest and nomination forms saying that should he be interested in contesting the presidential election that he would buy the forms by himself from his savings over decades in banking.

The unfounded reports of the sack of Mr Emefiele it was gathered comes against the background of the political permutations by interest groups to lure him away from his non-partisan duties into the presidential race.
