Recent developments in the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) indicating the continued grievance of stakeholders over the conduct of the governorship primaries are heightening unease over the prospects of the party in the state.

The concern of the stakeholders are underpinned by the resort to the courts by some of the aggrieved aspirants who believe that they were knocked out during the conduct of the three man ad-hoc delegates at the ward level.

One of the major contenders, Senator Albert Akpan had few days ago during an interview programme in a radio station in the state assured his supporters that he will be on the 2023 ballot of the PDP.

The controversy has been compounded by a fresh court case dated 7th June 2022 filed by one of the aspirants and former commissioner, Mr. Akan Okon seeking the disqualification of Umo Eno as candidate of the party.

Findings also revealed that another front line governorship aspirant and former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Onofiok Akpan Luke is also in Court over the congresses that produced the ad-hoc delegates.

It is even being speculated that the recent developments may not be unconnected with the fact that Governor Udom Emmauel has not yet kept his promise to set up a reconciliation panel to redress grievances as promised.

Some have also concluded that the governor may have developed cold feet over the reconciliation given that it’s been more than a week after the party’s primaries.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the governor had on  the day of theState House of Assembly primaries assured that a panel would be put in place to reconcile the aggrieved members and aspirants into the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the PDP as a way of lessening the unease.

A PDP chieftain in the state who spoke with GreenWhiteGreen GWG in confidence lamented “I have been in PDP politics for years now but I don’t understand what is happening this time around.

“Godswill Akpabio during his time did not waste time in trying to talk to the aggrieved governorship aspirants then, but I have not seen that happening today. They should be very careful that we don’t lose Akwa Ibom to another political party, that is my fear “.
