Nigerian born Kemi Badenoch is among five other aspirants who advanced in the race for the office of prime minister at the end of voting by British MPs on Wednesday.

Kemi was born of Nigerian parents in the UK but spent her childhood partly in Lagos and the United States. She returned to the UK at 16 and became an MP in 2017 and served as Minister of State for Local Government, Faith and Communities and Minister of State for Equalities between 2021 and 2022.

At the end of the first round of voting for the eight MPs seeking to replace Boris Johnson, she scored 40 votes and took fourth position in the polling that was won by former Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Sunak got 88 votes, with Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt in second place on 67 and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss third on 50.

Kemi Badenoch polled 40 votes. Tom Tugendhat polled 37 votes and Suella Braverman polled 32 votes.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that Nadhim Zahawi and Jeremy Hunt who scored 25 and 18 votes respectively were automatically eliminated leaving the six top finishers to continue in the race.

The series of voting by MPs will continue until two finalists remain who will then be voted for by party members.

Speaking to MPs on her desire, Kemi Bandeoch gave her Nigerian background as a stimulus,

“I grew up in Nigeria and I saw first hand what happens when politicians are in it for themselves, when they used public money as their private piggy banks, where they promise the earth but pollute not just the air but the whole political atmosphere with their failure to serve others.

“I came to Britain determined to make my way in a country where hard work and endeavour can take you anywhere,” Kemi Badenoch

Her father Femi Adegoke was a GP while her mother is a professor of physiology.
