Gunmen operating in Delta State have killed three police men and injured another during an ambush of a patrol team while responding to a distress call, The Nation has reported.

The Nation learnt the incident occurred around 4.00 am on Sunday in Okpanam, a suburb of Asaba metropolis, Oshimili North LGA.

It was gathered that the DPO despatched a four-man patrol team after receiving a distress call from a man popularly called Ruji that the vigilance group were being attacked.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the patrol team was attacked as they left the station, with three cops killed and another injured.

The source identified the slain officers as ASP Eke Francis, Inspector Joshua Akengbo and Corporal Perekedo Unene.

The injured officer, according to the source is ASP Bassey Wisdom, receiving treatment alongside members of the vigilance group at an undisclosed hospital.

It was learnt the gunmen were led by an Okpanam indigene.

Delta Police Command image maker, DSP Bright Edafe confirmed the incident.

The fact that the gunmen who ambushed the policemen were led by an indigene of the Delta community is bound to open questions as to the claim that most of the cases of insecurity reported in the state were fanned by Fulani gunmen.
