Abia Guber: Ikpeazu Challenges Returning Officer Oti Over Victory Dance, Gifts Received After Poll

The Abia State Government has debunked social media reports that Governor Okeize Ikpeazu’s aides were being paid N25m monthly describing the insinuations as unfounded.

The clarification came as Greg Ibe, Abia State governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, (APGA) advised Governor Okezie Ikpeazu against going for a fresh bank loan.

The advice came following the governor’s pledge of N450 million intervention to re-accredit the Abia State Polytechnic, Aba which was de-accredited by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) over non-payment of over 30 months salaries.

Ibe, who spoke on the alleged subtle plan by the State Government to borrow N450 million to bail out the Polytechnic, described the move as “digging a hole to fill a hole”.

The plan, according to Ibe  is not in the best interest of the state as the government could bail out the institution from its share of the federation allocation.

He stated that the government of Ikpeazu  was using the polytechnic as a cover to borrow money for unclear purposes after he was prevented in an earlier move to borrow N60 billion by Abia stakeholders.

He asked,  “Why plunge the state into further debt? Abia already has almost N100 billion debt hanging on its neck. How will the school operate if their debt servicing will take all the revenue collected from School fees.

“The state keeps receiving allocations from the Federal Government every month and Abians want to know how the funds are spent”.

But, Eze Chikamnayo, the state Commissioner of Information debunked the speculation that Governor Ikpeazu’s aides were being paid N25m monthly, dismissing the allegation as unfounded.

He said, “There is no such thing. It’s only a figment of the imagination of the peddlers. I advise Abians to be weary of those propagating such lies”,

He clarified that the directive for Abia Polytechnic to operate a single treasury account was part of the measures to curb sharp practices and enthrone transparency.

He further maintained that the  directive was to open a single treasury account and ensure all inflows go into one account for transparency and accountability.
