The Ekiti State Police Command has apprehended a serial phone thief, Babatunde Olaoluwa, who has been terrorizing worship centers in the state.

Olaoluwa was caught after stealing seven mobile phones from unsuspecting worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Ayegbaju-Ekiti.

According to a statement by DSP Sunday Abutu, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, the modus operandi of the phone thief involved posing as a fellow worshipper, waiting for moments of heightened praise and distraction to execute his deed during worship. Investigations revealed that he had targeted several churches in Oye and Ayegbaju-Ekiti, including the Redeemed Christian Church of God and New Reality Christian Center.

The phone thief suspect confessed to sending the stolen phones to Lagos through a motor park, where an accomplice sold them and transferred the proceeds back to him through online transactions. The seven stolen phones were recovered from Olaoluwa, and several victims identified him as the perpetrator.

DSP Abutu assured that the suspect would face prosecution after the completion of the investigation. This incident highlights the need for worship centers to prioritize security measures to protect congregants from criminal activities.

In a statement, DSP Abutu said, “The Ekiti State Police Command is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, including worshippers. We urge worship centers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent future incidents.”
