Mistakes LASTMA want

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, (LASTMA)is a Lagos State-owned agency under the Ministry of Transportation conceived to guide road traffic and ensure there are no mistakes. The agency was established on the 15th of July, 2000 to transform the state transportation system and also reduce road accidents.

Here are six mistakes overzealous LASTMA operatives want drivers to make on Lagos roads.

Merging with a lane that leads to a diversion

Motorists that try to merge with a lane that leads to an exit off the expressway will be caught for obstructing the flow of traffic, one of traffic rules and regulations in Nigeria issued by FRSC. Every driver needs to clearly stay in the lane that leads to that exit from the beginning of the queue.

Parking a vehicle on the highway

In Lagos today, if you make the mistake to park your car on the road for  five minutes  you might come back and find out it has been towed away by LASTMA because you committed an improper parking offence.

Not using your seatbelt

In the past, sighting only FRSC officials triggers you to check if you are wearing the seatbelt or not but these days, LASTMA officials are out for seatbelts too.  Indeed things have changed.

Making wrong U-turns

Wrong U-turns commonly happen when you are driving in new areas. You need to know that not every opening between two opposite lanes is a U-turn point. Some may just be  damaged parts of the roads while some are just there to lure you into committing an offence.

Most times, an opening between two opposite lanes should have the “NO U-TURN” but if it is absent and you make the mistake to do a U-turn, sadly you will be caught and fined by lurking LASTMA officials.

Making use of phones

Using phones has always been illegal because it distracts drivers and causes accidents on the roads but as technology advanced, mobile phones gained the ability to help drivers navigate road maps.

In case you didn’t know, LASTMA has the right to arrest you if you are caught using your phone for anything at all while driving.

 Dropping/picking passengers on highways

It is no longer allowed for any driver to just lift a stranger from an expressway or drop people off on the side of major highways without getting arrested.  You can only drop-off/pick-up people at designated bus-stops.

Using One Way

LASTMA officials are normally found lurking around entry points into one way and exit points, waiting for motorists to enter even though there are no signs indicating that the road is one way.
