Melinda Gates Opens Up On How COVID-19 Lockdown Hastened Divorce From Bill
Melinda French Gates has spoken out for the first time how the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown helped her to navigate towards a divorce from Bill Gates.
Melinda, 58, and Bill, 66, who were married in 1994 announced their divorce in May 2021.
In an interview with Fortune Magazine, Melinda said: “I had some reasons I just couldn’t stay in that marriage anymore.
“But the odd thing about COVID is that it gave me the privacy to do what I needed to do.
“It’s unbelievably painful, in innumerable ways, but I had the privacy to get through it.”
She said that her focus upon deciding on a divorce was her three children — Jennifer, 25, Rory, 23, and Phoebe, 19.
The shared interests in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was according to her another concern but she said that the shared interest in the foundation helped her to process her emotions going through with the divorce.
She said: “I kept working with the person I was moving away from, and I needed to show up and be my best self every single day. So even though I might be crying at 9 a.m. and then have to be on a video conference at 10 a.m. with the person I’m leaving, I have to show up and be my best.
“I learned as a leader that I could do it. It reminded me that the foundation calls me to be my best,” Melinda Gates said of her divorce from Bill following the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
GWG.NG reports that the divorce was followed with revelations of Bill Gates sustaining an extra-marital relationship with a Microsoft employee over a period.
