‘I’m Very Sorry For Him’, Says Mourinho About Chris Smalling
Despite his recent form, Chris Smalling will not be included in Southgate’s England squad for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, according to Roma manager Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho acknowledges that the 32-year-old Roma defender has performed admirably enough to earn a place in England’s squad, but he also expresses “pity” for him.
He claimed that England coach Gareth Southgate has consistently overlooked the defender, Chris Smalling, because he has not played for England since 2017.
“If I were the coach of a national team, I would do anything to have someone like him at my disposal,” the Portuguese told reporters.
“I don’t think it’s a lack of respect to Gareth Southgate when I say that I feel very sorry for a player who’s playing at such a high level like Smalling and who won’t get the opportunity he deserves.”
The World Cup starts in November 2022 and national team handlers will be announcing their squad any moment from now.
Recall that Jose Mourinho claimed Karim Benzema is “obsessed with his team” – which is what helped him win the Ballon d’Or at the age of 34.
The Real Madrid star became the fifth Frenchman to claim the individual accolade after his sensational year in Spain. Benzema was the leading light for Los Blancos as they won LaLiga and the Champions League, with those exploits helping the forward claim the Golden Ball.
