Abba Kyari’s IRT Tampered With Seized Cocaine, Court Told
A Federal High Court in Abuja heard that the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by suspended DCP Abba Kyari tampered with cocaine recovered from drug traffickers.
Mohammed Ajia, the head of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s (NDLEA) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, said men from the IRT arrested two drug traffickers – Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne – with the drugs they brought in from Ethiopia and transferred them to his command.
According to Ajia, when the drugs were tested, 80 percent of them were pure cocaine, while the rest appeared to be adulterated. Kyari and his team tampered with the cocaine.
He spoke as a prosecution witness in the trial of Kyari and four members of the IRT – ACP Sunday J. Ubua, ASP Bawa James, Inspector Simon Agirgba, and Inspector John Nuhu – on Wednesday.
Kyari and others are accused of conspiring to deal in 17.55kg of cocaine, dealing in cocaine without lawful authority, conspiring to tamper with cocaine, and unlawfully tampering with the 21.35kg of cocaine seized from Umeibe and Ezenwanne.
Kyari was charged solely with attempting to obstruct NDLEA officials from carrying out their duties by offering them a bribe.
The Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, NDLEA, led Ajia into the witness stand.
He told the court that on February 4, this year, he received a transfer letter containing information about two suspected drug traffickers as well as some exhibits, including the drugs.
