2023 intrigues in Delta

Ahead of the Supreme Court judgement on the legal tussle between Speaker Sheriff  Oborevwori and Olorogun David Edebvie on who is the rightful candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta State, the political class is understandably in unprecedented suspense.
Oborevwori had won the primary but Edevbie had challenged his qualification upon allegations of allegedly forged documents.
After an initial victory at the High Court for Edevbie, the Court of Appeal threw the baton to Oborevwori.

The Supreme Court gives the final decision this Friday.
GWG.NG had projected that a victory for Oborevwori could pose more trouble for the PDP and the outgoing governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa on the basis of the fact that the majority of Edevbie’s supporters in the PDP could switch loyalty to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
However, if victory goes to Edevbie the implications are that the APC could be in trouble as the expected rebellion towards Omo-Agege would not materialise.

What would happen is that the supporters of Oborevwori, would at worst be lethargic and adopt a “siddon look” position.
However, the leader of the party, Okowa would not follow them and for him, he would rather cut his losses and embrace Edevbie and work with him towards a managed victory for the PDP.
GWG.NG reports that it would be a replay of the 2015 succession in which Okowa emerged PDP candidate despite the dogged opposition of the then governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Unlike Uduaghan who did not have much to lose after stepping down as governor, Okowa who is the PDP Vice-Presidential Candidate has the major trophy of the number two seat in the country ahead of him.
Ensuring that he keeps Delta in the custody of the PDP would be his major drive.
Many political actors in Delta say that his best bet would be with Edevbie in which case, Okowa, Edevbie and the big Masquerade, James Ibori would again come under their common umbrella.

Otherwise, a Supreme Court victory for Oborevwori would see Okowa and Oborevwori soldier under a leaking umbrella and suffer the torrents of rebellion.
It would be no surprise that in his own prayer corner that Omo-Agege is praying at least for once that Okowa and Oborevwori win just this one!
