Hoodlums Use Petrol Soaked Bread To Burn Ogun INEC Office

An office of the the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at Iyana, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital was set on fire in the wee of the night leading into Thursday.

According to sources about eight hoodlums were said to have scaled the fence into the office and set fire to the office using bread soaked with petrol which were thrown into different sections of the office.

The purpose of the arsonists have not been confirmed and a worried Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC for Ogun State, Niyi Ijalaye expressed outrage over the attempt to burn down the INEC office.

A source said that the security man guarding the office on noticing the move to burn the premises had immediately contacted the police who in turn mobilized firefighters to the office to salvage the situation.

Offices particularly affected by the inferno were the store, the Registration Area Officer’s office and the conference room.

The Ogun REC, Ijalaye, while confirming the attempt to burn down the INEC office said:

“It is correct that our office was set on fire. The police are investigating. I do not know what to say. I’m in shock myself. We called the police and other security agencies at night. The fire brigade put the situation under control. The level of damage is still being assessed.

“It is very shocking and untoward. The security agencies are doing their very best. We are meeting again later today to come up with other strategies (toward securing our facilities),” Ijalaye said.
