There is animated suspense ahead of today’s visit by APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to Oporoza, Delta State the base of former militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.
GWG.NG reports that Tompolo is known to wield powerful influence in the politics of Delta State and was largely instrumental to the emergence of the incumbent deputy governor, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro. Otuaro’s emergence followed the shadowy plot masterminded by the powerful Senator James Manager, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa among others against the then governor of the state, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan ahead of the 2015 General Election.
However, political stakeholders in Delta State say that the alliance of Manager, Okowa and Tompolo may have unravelled following issues related to the emergence of Okowa’s successor.
The coldness in the relationship among the leaders it was gathered has been shadowed by the fervent pursuit of Tompolo by APC leaders and notably Senator Omo-Agege. GWG.NG reports that Omo-Agege was about the first prominent leader from Delta State to openly back the award of the pipeline surveillance contract to Tompolo describing it as a good decision.
With Tompolo bearing large influence in the politics of Delta through his patronage and other means GWG.NG gathered that there is great unease among some especially in the PDP over a possible deal between Tompolo and the APC that could come out from the visit of Tinubu to Oporoza on Friday.
However, a very senior campaign official speaking ahead of the visit told GWG.NG that he could not confirm a meeting with Tompolo saying “yes, we are having a meeting, it is a routine political meeting.”
Ahead of the meeting, the APC was on Thursday mobilising supporters for what could be a breakthrough for the party in Delta.
Nevertheless, Tompolo’s imprints in the PDP are said to be partially restricted by family commitments including family members who are presently candidates in the PDP.
