Obaseki-Shaibu bribe saga

More details of the alleged bribe saga pitching Governor Godwin Obaseki, his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu and Chief Dan Orbih, the national vice-chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, South-South over the Edo State PDP governorship ticket of 2020 were emerging on Friday after a video of the allegations turned viral.

GWG.ng reports that Orbih who hosted party faithful at his – residence had while briefing some leading stakeholders said that the deputy governor of the state, Comrade Philip Shaibu had told him that he contributed $300,000 to the money that Governor Godwin Obaseki allegedly used to procure the ticket of the PDP in 2020.

According to Orbih, Shaibu said the money was passed on to him, Orbih and Ogbiede-Ihama, who was the favourite to win the PDP ticket in 2020.

GWG.ng reports that Shaibu has since disowned the claim saying that he never contributed or knew of money being passed on the ticket.

In the viral video now circulating Orbih told some party stakeholders including a former senator the story of the bribe saga involving Governor Obaseki, Shaibu and himself.

He said:

A committee was set up by the party comprising Okowa, governor of Delta State who is today the vice presidential candidate, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Darius (Taraba) and Samuel Ortom. Ortom was the chairman of the committee. We met in the early hours of the morning. We came out of the meeting feeling that we had addressed the issues in Edo State. It was decided even though it was not fair to me and to those Obaseki met in this party, they said Obaseki should produce 13 members of the House of Assembly, the legacy people should produce 11 members, the senatorial candidate of the party was agreed by the party at the national level that it would be given to Ogbiede-Ihama and the remaining two should be shared between the legacy and Obaseki.

House of Representatives, five to legacy, four to Obaseki. We agreed came out of the meeting, shook hands and were celebrating the resolution of the problem in Edo State.

After that meeting it was agreed that we go to Benin. I took a flight to Benin, the governor came, the deputy governor came to Benin and I must say at that meeting for the first time, God gave me an opportunity to  look at Governor Obaseki in the face, and I challenged him, “I have heard stories that you said that you bought the ticket (2020 governorship ticket) of PDP, did money exchange hands between us and yourself in your coming to PDP? I said your deputy governor seated here told me that you asked him to contribute $300,000 in settling the issue of your moving to PDP.

“I said Philip Shaibu said he gave you $300,000 to add to the money you gave to Ogbiede-Ihama and myself. I said, Governor Obaseki can you tell us in this gathering whether you gave one kobo to me or Ogbeide-Ihama, he said that he did not give and that he did not tell any person that he gave us money.

“I said Philip Shaibu you are seated here, did you not tell us that you gave $300,000 to Obaseki to add to the money to settle the PDP ticket, he said he said so in the presence of Obaseki and the other governors looked at themselves and they shook their heads.”
