The troubles of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar were escalating on the second day of the New Year with his rejection by President Olusegun Obasanjo about being compounded by the imminent plan of another governor to join the Governor Nyesom Wike led G5.

GWG.ng reports that Obasanjo had on New Year day openly scorned Atiku, his most famous mentee by endorsing Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi.

It has now emerged that Governor Bala Mohammed who had previously had simmering issues with the PDP presidential candidate could join the G5 governors led by Wike following assertions that Atiku has continued to nurture grudges against the governor.

Bala Mohammed had contested the PDP presidential ticket with Atiku and refused to step down despite entreaties from the former vice president and some Northern leaders.

Daily Trust has now reported that Bala Mohammed has invited Wike and his allies to the commencement of his governorship campaign on Wednesday, indicating a public identification of the rebellion against the PDP candidate.

A source told the newspaper, “As I speak with you, the G-5 governors are ready to attend Bala Mohammed’s campaign flag-off in Bauchi. All arrangements have been concluded, and I can confirm that to you. Except any new development comes up which I do not envisage, the governors will be in Bauchi.”

The source also stated that the governors would move from Bauchi to Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to also attend the campaign of one of their members, Governor Seyi Makinde, billed for Thursday, January 5.

Even though he has not openly declared his membership of the G-5 governors, Bala Mohammed has been having a running battle with Atiku Abubakar, accusing the PDP presidential candidate and his supporters of working against his re-election bid.

In a letter written to the national chairman of the party, Dr Iyorcha Ayu, dated November 3, 2022, Mohammed alleged that Atiku had threatened to “punish” him for contesting against him during the party’s presidential primary in May.

Bala had also threatened that if the issues were not resolved, “I may withdraw from the PCC and feel free to create new measures and strategies that would guarantee the election and re-election of all PDP candidates in Bauchi and myself.”

GWG.ng reports that one of those Bala Mohammed could be complaining of in the Atiku campaign is Yakubu Dogara, the immediate past speaker of the House of Representatives who has been working strenuously among the Northern Christian community to shore up the PDP candidate.

Should Governor Mohammed join the Wike led G5, it would compound the troubles of Atiku as it could weaken his chances in the vote rich Bauchi State that he has struggled to win in his past efforts.
