New questions about Senator Ifeanyi Okowa’s mastery of politics were being raised on Wednesday on social media after the issue of his viability and contributions to the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP turned into a twitter storm.

GWG.ng reports that Okowa, the two-term governor of Delta State was picked ahead of other PDP governors by Atiku Abubakar as his running mate in a decision that initially provoked taunts and criticisms following his role in hosting fellow Southern governors at a summit in 2021 where it was decided that it was the turn of the South to produce the president of the country.

However, Okowa’s choice was praised by political pundits who paid reference to his experience in all levels of government from the local government through the state to the Federal Government where he served as a senator. His executive and legislative experiences were also brought to bear.

Even more, perspective of him as an Igbo from the South-South was seen as a masterstroke by the PDP in consolidating its foothold in the two geopolitical zones of the South-South and the Southeast.

Supporters also brought to fore his performance as governor where he was dubbed as a road master.

However, the presidential election humbled the outgoing governor as he lost what had been a safe state of the PDP to the Labour Party. Even more, most of the South-South was swept off by the Obidient phenomenon.

However, the governor was able in the three weeks following the loss able to reinvent himself and marshal the PDP to victory in the governorship election in Delta State.

The PDP victory in the governorship election according to political pundits was also helped by the internal divisions in the All Progressives Congress, APC that saw many chieftains of the party working against the governorship candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

Against the background of the loss, some took to twitter to raise the viability of Okowa on the presidential ticket. While some who had claimed that he was of no relevance are now coming around to assert that the Delta State governor was after all the best choice in the light of the circumstances, others were still sticking to their opposition.

GWG.ng gathered some of the reactions to the politics around the choice of Okowa as running mate:
