A mayor in Brazil has married a 16-year-old beauty queen and promoted her mother to a top job, according to reports.

Hissam Hussein Dehaini, the 65-year-old mayor of the municipality of Araucaria in the Brazilian state of Paraná, reportedly married his juvenile bride Kauane Rode Camargo last month.

The high school student competed in the Miss Araucária competition last year in the teen division for females aged 15 to 17 and finished second.

According to Vogue in Brazil, the “teen princess” attends a civic-military high school in the city that her future husband is in charge of.

Reports state that the couple met at a city social gathering. Hissam divorced his second wife last year and is currently serving his second term as mayor.

On April 12, the day after the mayor wed Kauane Rode Camargo, Marilene Rode, Kauane’s mother, was appointed the Araucaria Secretary of Culture. According to sources, she had previously worked as a general secretary.

Elizângela Rode, Marilene’s sister, is also a commissioner in City Hall. Because the wedding to Banda B is a private matter, the local council apparently declined to comment.

According to the Brazilian Civil Code “man and woman aged sixteen can marry, requiring authorization from both parents, or their legal representatives, until they reach the age of civil majority”.

Flávia Gomes Cordeiro, a prosecutor of Piauí, child marriage for girls causes a life of “domestic service, lack of professional training, exclusion from the labor market, school dropout and restriction of mobility and freedom”.
