Police have detained a mother who is accused of using a machete to kill her five-year-old son, then cooking and eating a portion of his head.

The arrest was made after the boy’s horrified uncle discovered body parts in buckets at the boy’s home in Abu Shalabi, Egypt.

The confession by the suspect, Hanaa, that she had eaten a portion of her son’s head because she “wanted him to stay with her forever” startled the officers.

According to reports, the 29-year-old struck the terrified child four times in the skull before slaughtering his body in the restroom. Then, she allegedly cooked his head and other pieces of flesh on the stovetop until they were fully cooked before devouring them.

She told the Faqous, Ash Sharqiyah Governorate police that she “suffers from a mental illness” and hadn’t intended to harm her son after being apprehended.

She had been living alone with the victim, Youssef, after divorcing her husband, who maintains that she was well aware of her actions. The unidentified ex-husband told the local media: “When I arrived, the police prevented me from seeing my son because of the horrific scene.”

He explained: “We separated from each other four years ago because she had land from her father and asked me to leave the house and my family and go with her to live on the land. But I refused, and the relationship ended entirely by her will, and I tried to reconcile with her after the divorce, but she refused and stuck to her opinion.

My son was the one who kept me connected to her, and I used to see him regularly and bring him clothes and things he needed. But recently, she was trying to keep him away from me and plant hatred towards me in his heart, so he wouldn’t come to me. I was trying to communicate with her family to see my son and make sure he was okay.”

According to his lawyer, Samir Mohamed Saleh, the suspect was stone-faced when she told her questioners: “I wanted to free him and myself. I wanted to take revenge against his father and be free. His father keeps coming and trying to take him away all the time.”

In a statement, the Public Prosecution Office stated that the suspect had been held and that a mental health evaluation will be conducted to ascertain whether or not she was of sound mind.
