A Nigerian man has been detained in India on suspicion of defrauding a lonely 64-year-old woman of her life savings.

The Times of India claims that the Parnasree woman who began spending hours on Facebook during the pandemic ultimately fell victim to a trap that was devised by a Nigerian national who was operating with an Indian fraudster.

The offender, known as Young Emeka, came forward to the police in April, and on Saturday, May 6, 2023, he was eventually apprehended outside of Delhi.

The culprit had to be taken into custody after the detective division and crime branch of the Delhi Police stormed a Chander Vihar neighborhood in the dead of night after being initially resisted by locals.

DC (cyber) Atul V claims that Emeka befriended the woman on the online platform while assuming the identity of a British man named Eric James.

Emeka apparently offered to give the woman a present that he said contained foreign funds as they ostensibly became closer.

Shortly after, he reportedly informed her that the item had been seized by Customs because a “duty” of Rs 7.9 lakh was unpaid. According to authorities, after being persuaded, the woman promptly spent all her life savings to pay the impending “Customs duty.” Thereafter, the defendant severed all contacts to the accuser once the money vanished.

“Based on the IMEI (device) search of the number, we traced Emeka to near Jiya Memorial Public School in Chander Vihar,” said Atul V. The said phone has been seized. “Emeka was produced at Tis Hazari court in Delhi on Saturday, from where we are securing his transit custody,” said Atul.

“Police are finding out if Emeka was part of cyber gangs in Delhi. These gangs have duped hundreds of women, not just in India but also in Portugal, Sweden and the Netherlands,” said an officer.
